Objectives
State LiPo hazard characteristics and the battery-fire response; demonstrate correct charger-case grouping and settings; prepare batteries for storage and UN3480 Class 9 transport.
Outline
- Chemistry honesty: what 570 Wh per pack means in fire terms. The GCS manual’s battery-fire procedure cites ignition above 150 °C (GCS 5.3); the Heavy Lift manual separately warns that exposure above 75 °C may cause ignition and fire (HL 3.1). Fires re-ignite hours later.
- Charging discipline: only batteries with similar states of charge in the same group, no more than 30 A, never left unattended, flame-retardant location free of ignition sources (HL 3.2, 3.1).
- Storage: room temperature 20–25 °C, never in a vehicle, discharge to approximately 60% for storage beyond one week (HL 3.1, 3.3).
- UN3480 Class 9 classification; SDS and UN 38.3 test reports supplied with the battery — shipping is a planning task, not an afterthought (HL 3.3).
- Fire response walkthrough: remain upwind, CO₂ extinguishers plus sand, contact EMS, refer to the SDS (GCS 5.3).
